I am not especially happy with this one. I tried to fix it, but I wound up making more of a mess of it than anything. It's still worth posting though.
I pretty much write whatever strikes my mood but chances are it will have a grown-up kid perspective. I live in Asheville, NC and that alone could be a whole blog in itself. A little bit of creative art, some wilderness adventures,my dog, tales of my childhood, observations at Starbucks...Lot's of variety here. Enjoy.

On a borrowed Etch A Sketch
When I was a kid I loved my full-sized Etch A Sketch. I could sit for hours and completely immerse myself in it and forget about the world around me. I would draw the interior of the whole living room right down to the ripples in the curtains and sleeping parent on the couch. I drew my bedroom. Very much against the rules of paying attention in class, I even took it to school a few times and drew the inside of the classroom. Once I did an entire 50 five-point star American Flag complete with 13 stripes billowing in some imaginary breeze. Race cars. Trucks. Teddy bears. Block lettering with 3-D and shadows. The drawings themselves were never especially memorable other than being on the Etch A Sketch...that's the part that makes them cool. A few weeks ago, while babysitting, I discovered a Travel-sized one not being used by its 5 Year Old owner. I snatched it up to borrow and as far as I know he doesn't realize it's missing. I promise to return it to him, I swear! My Inner Child is absolutely ecstatic with the memories and current work it's once again able to do on its tiny 3x4 inch workspace. There is something deeply meditative about sinking oneself in a child's toy for hours on end...when was the last time you played with your kid's toys? Are you too grown up for such frivolity? You should try it and see how you feel. For me, it was therapeutic then and it still is today only instead of drawing Teddy bears, now it's Van Gogh. I don't even mind the stares I get when my head is down and buried in it at my corner table at Starbucks. I highly recommend picking one up...they aren't as difficult to use as you might think.
